From close to Thurlby crossroads, the Roman line headed straight for
the purpose at which Bourne Abbey was later constructed on. From Bourne Abbey,
it passed alongside Meadowgate, then by Cawthorpe to Clipseygap Lane, Hanthorpe and
the Roman city at Stainfield. The plate is then dipped in a bath of acid,
known because the mordant (French for “biting”) or
etchant, or has acid washed over it.
